So I found this harlequin romance paperback today, and normally I just toss those right over without paying them much mind, but the cover of this one made me pause. Sure that the artist was just taking liberties, I checked out the back.
I’m dubious. I should read a passage:
It is a literal bear.
Okay yeah I’ll admit it I’m going to read this but only because it sounds like the most fucked up romance novel in existence.
You have some explaining to do, Canada.
Alright on a serious note I read the book and although it’s not harlequin, it’s still a romance. And unfortunately not a very well written one. It was weird, yes, and I know Engel was going for something specific metaphorically here, but it just didn’t come through very well and left me with a blah feeling in the end. Maybe because it was written in the mid-70s, who knows. But it’s less than 200 pages so if you can find it super cheap and enjoy vaguely gross bear-human relations, go for it.
My summer reading list just got weird.
